California’s Newest Billionaires: Powerball Jackpot Winners Collect $1.765B
The $1.765 billion Powerball jackpot that was won in California in October of last year has been claimed by its winners.
A Powerball ticket that was purchased in Frazier Park, California, for the drawing on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, was successful in matching the red Powerball with the five white numbers. They can now claim the second-largest lottery win in US history as a result. The fortunate play was bought at Kern County's Midway Market, a family-run company that has been in operation for 30 years and received a $1 million extra commission for selling the winning ticket.
A little mountain community called Frazier Park is located roughly 50 miles north of Los Angeles.
Theodorus Struyck, a 65-year-old native of California, came forward to claim the historic reward. California's lottery winners are required to reveal their identities in order to maintain public confidence in the government-run lottery. There are lotteries in forty-four states, but only eleven of them let the winners stay anonymous.
According to Struyck, he spoke on behalf of a group of winners who buy Powerball tickets together and agree to split any rewards.
The number of other members in the organization was not disclosed in the California Lottery statement. Additionally, it was not made clear if the organization opted for the entire 30 year annuity payout or the one-time cash option for about $774.1 million. Both sums are before the 37% federal tax rate. Lottery wins are not subject to additional taxes in California.
Dreams and Hopes
After the interstate lottery game passed 35 draws without a single ticket matching the six drawn numbers, Struyck and his friends won the Powerball jackpot. There is a one in 292.2 million chance of succeeding.
According to California Lottery officials, the run brought in about $120 million for the state's public schools, which receives lottery proceeds. According to the lottery release, the millions of players nationwide who have not yet won the big prize have "hope" that they will be the next to cash in on this jackpot ticket.
"Announcing big wins like this gives all of our players the chance to hope and dream that they could be next,” said California Lottery Director Harjinder K. Shergill Chima. “But it also gives us an opportunity to shine the spotlight on our terrific mission, which is to generate additional, supplemental funding for public education in California.”
Chima stated that although the majority of Powerball players may never hit the big prize, California kids benefit daily from the lottery.
Regarding Struyck, the victory "couldn't have happened to a better guy," according to his neighbors. Struyck has been residing in a little house that is less than 1,200 square feet for a number of years.
According to neighbor Kevin Woten, "he's a family man, loves to spend time with his grandkids," as reported by the Daily Mail. He appears happy all the time and is a truly pleasant person. He probably has a lot of ideas for what to do with the money.
Struyck is a native of Hawaii. After the terrible Maui wildfires, Woten claimed to have had a lengthy conversation with Struyck, but he couldn't recall Struyck mentioning that he had family there.
Jackpots Increasing
The Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots are rising to almost unheard-of heights, signaling the impending arrival of the next big lottery winner in the US.
